There’s nothing quite like hopping into your car, hitching up your caravan and getting away from it all for a few days… but you do need to take care when towing your caravan, as it can be dangerous - especially if you’re new to touring holidays and don’t have much experience in driving with something attached to your car.
Before you hit the open road on your next caravan holiday, check both the car and the caravan or trailer over, making sure the tyres are inflated correctly and have the appropriate amount of tread so you know you’ll be safe.
Cast your eye over the breakaway cable to make sure it’s in good working order and connected correctly and always do your best not to overload the caravan or trailer as this could make you more unstable on the road.
Once you’re on your merry way to your holiday destination, take more care than you usually would if you were just driving your car. On the motorway, you are not permitted to drive in the right-hand lane if there are three or more lanes, with a speed limit of 60mph on motorways and dual carriageways.
Always check the weather before you go so you’ll know if it’s likely to be blustery out there as this can make it hard to keep your caravan under control.
